Jericho: A Walking RPG, Now in Open Beta on iPhone and Android

Walk further. Get stronger. Beat your friends.

Jericho is a role-playing game you play by walking. Every step you take feeds a character who levels up, grows stronger, learns to fight, and carries a card you can show your friends. Put the phone in your pocket and go somewhere — the game is already playing.

In Jericho, your steps are the only currency that matters.

Open beta · play now on iPhone & Android

Jericho is in open beta and playable today. It's free, and it runs on real step data:

  • iPhone — through Apple's TestFlight (version 1.3.0, approved by Apple), reading Apple Health.
  • Android — a direct download, reading Health Connect.

Join the beta — that page walks you through the install on either phone.

You sign in with Google or Apple, and your hero lives on your account, so a new phone picks up where the old one left off. Main site: jericho.coders.ph · Community: Discord.

Walking is the whole engine

There's no other fuel. Steps become experience, and experience becomes levels. Steps also become energy, and energy is what a fight costs. Every step counts, up to 30,000 a day (about 22 km).

Your hero is a readout of your day, too: the figure changes stance as you walk. It starts out walking, breaks into a run at 5,000 steps, draws its weapon at 10,000, and by 20,000 it's mid-ultimate — a pose only heavy walkers ever see.

Four hand-drawn classes

Striker, Infiltrator, Bulwark and Adept. Each one is hand-drawn in both a masculine and a feminine presentation.

The four Jericho classes, hand-drawn: a Striker, an Infiltrator, a Bulwark and an Adept

None of them is stronger. Every class starts on the same stat total at every level — only the split differs — so there's no wrong pick, just four different shapes of fight.

Twenty monsters, then The Boss

Twenty monsters stand on a ladder to level 100, a new one every five levels, ending with The Boss. Each one is a lucky win on the day it unlocks, and a close fight a few levels later.

Duel your friends

Jericho is built for friends competing with each other, not for anonymous leaderboards. The people who make you walk further are the ones who know you. There are three ways to fight:

  • Friendly duels. See which friends are online, send a challenge, and fight them there and then — turn for turn, in real time, against the actual person.
  • Ranked duels. Search for a match with somebody near your trophies and your strength. The result moves your rating.
  • Practice. A sparring partner near your strength, fought on your own phone. It costs nothing and works offline.

A Jericho duel: two fighters face off, with the skill bar along the bottom of the screen

Fights are simple to pick up: you bring four skills, and one tap is your turn. You and your opponent choose at the same time, and both moves land together.

The combat is mild fantasy. Nobody dies and there's no blood — the loser kneels, tired, and gets up for the next one. And a duel is played for the ranking and nothing else: no coins, no loot, and nothing lost by whoever loses. Walking is the only thing that makes you stronger.

Friends, guilds and guild wars

Add friends by code or by request. Team up in a guild, and take it to war.

A guild war pairs two guilds for 48 hours, with a day's warning first — because knowing a long walk is coming is what makes people plan one. The scoring is easy to check in your head: every fielded member's steps over the two days, added up. Each person counts up to 30,000 a day, so one marathon walker can't carry a war alone. Joining is your own choice, so a week of travel never means letting your guild down.

The hero card and its ranks

Your hero is a trading card: pale stock with a linen weave, a printed face, and rounded corners.

A Jericho hero card: a Striker at level 10 with the rank of Sergeant, showing combat power, energy and total steps

The rank on your card is called ascension, and each rank changes the card's color. Reaching the level makes a rank available; one big walking day is what earns it:

  • Sergeant — from level 1, in your class color
  • Lieutenant — level 10, then 20,000 steps in one day — cold cyan
  • Captain — level 30, then 25,000 in one day — gold
  • Major — level 60, then 30,000 in one day — violet
  • General — level 100, then 30,000 on two days running — red

The ask stops climbing at 30,000 on purpose: this is a health game before it's anything else, and 30,000 is a real day's walking, no more. Once you've held a rank you keep its colors, so the loudest thing on your card is a record of how far you've walked.

Money can't buy power

This is the promise the whole game is built around: energy, rank and stats are never for sale. It's enforced in the code, not just written in a paragraph like this one. And today, nothing can be bought at all — there's no purchase flow in the app.

The game is friends dueling friends. A friend who paid beating a friend who walked would end it.

Your step data stays yours

Step counts are health data, and Jericho treats them that way. The only thing that can ever leave your phone is totals — the day's count and your all-time count — never raw samples, and never for advertising. Friends and guildmates see your day only if you choose to share it.

Who it's for

No gaming experience needed. Jericho stays light: a character you grow by walking, and nothing more you have to learn. Somebody who has never played a game can pick it up in a minute.

Jericho is for ages 13 and up. It has accounts, health data and people you can talk to.
